SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Sophomore forward Brian Ackley scored with a header in the 106th minute to lead No. 12 Indiana to a 1-0 victory over No. 8 Creighton at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament at the University of Notre Dame.
"I am very proud of what I saw after this first game," said head coach Mike Freitag. "I liked what everyone did, and the way that everyone played. They found a way to win. The character of this team is incredible. The defense just dominated tonight, they did not give up much. There are a few things that could be better, but in the end we did alright."
Indiana dominated on the scoreboard, as they out-shot Creighton 22-6 in the game and held a 16-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Brad Ring and senior Josh Tudela both led the Hoosiers with five shots each, several of which just missed the goal.
Junior Chris Munroe played the entire game in goal for Indiana, making three saves. Creighton counterpart Allen had five saves.
Creighton had its best scoring chance with its first shot of the game in the ninth minute. Senior Michael Kraus shot a zinger towards Munroe, who made the save for Indiana.
Both Creighton and Indiana are ranked in the top-12 of the National Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll.
