GENEVA -- Togo's soccer federation was fined $80,700 by FIFA on Friday for the national team's strike threat during the World Cup.
The sport's governing body called Togo's actions "unworthy of a participant in the World Cup." It added that the Togolese federation's admission of guilt and apology worked in its favor. Togo can appeal the ruling until Sept. 2.
During the World Cup in Germany, Togo players initially refused to travel to Dortmund to play Switzerland on June 19 because of a pay dispute with their federation. They were persuaded to go after FIFA intervened.
