Roeder keen to continue adding to squad

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder will return to the scene of one of his earliest triumphs relishing the task of rebuilding his squad.

Roeder will send out his side at Aston Villa on Sunday six months after claiming victory there in his first away match in caretaker charge of the Magpies.

Goals from Shola Ameobi and Charles N'Zogbia handed the visitors a 2-1 win that day despite Celestine Babayaro's dismissal, to give the stand-in boss six points from six and launch his team on the road to a top-seven finish.

This time the Magpies head for Villa Park having banked three Premiership points against Wigan last weekend and with their summer overhaul belatedly gathering pace.

Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins could make his debut after completing a £10million move from Inter Milan, and as the closure of the transfer window approaches, Roeder is working around the clock to land his remaining targets.

The manager said: 'You are trying to keep so many balls up in the air at the same time.

'The season has started now, there is training to be taken care of during the day, there are matches to be overseen - and win.

'At the same time, you have to find enough time to make sure the players you want, you get before the transfer window closes.

'It's not quite 24 hours a day, but it's not far off at the moment. But I have to say, I am really enjoying it.'

Roeder will hope goalkeeper Shay Given has recovered from a back muscle strain and striker Ameobi from hip and hamstring problems.
