Premier Showdown - Aug 22/23

It was hardly a high scoring affair, but Dale Johnson secured victory in the opening weekend's round of Premier Showdown.

Seven points is hardly one of the most impressive totals to seal the three points but, as they say, you can only beat what's put in front of you.

Tommy - who just missed out on victory - and our Rest of the World team will be eager for a quick response. And they get the chance to prove their worth with the midweek action.

Representing the ROTW is John Flanagan - a Brit abroad.

John, 43, is originally from Liverpool but now lives in Virginia, USA, and is an aircraft maintenance supervisor with United Airlines.

He has two American born lads who, just like John, are Everton mad - John Michael (10) and Jack Everton (8). John has supported Everton since birth.

John says: 'Come on you Blues!'

Each week one of our readers, or an ESPNSoccernet Press Pass viewer, will get the chance to challenge our two experts. They, along with the challenger, will cast their eyes over weekend's top flight fixtures in England and predict how they think each game will turn out.

Soccernet's Premiership Editor, Dale Johnson, and Press Pass pundit Tommy Smyth take up the challenge from our team.

Points are then awarded as follows:
• Three points for a correct result and scoreline

  • One point for a correct result

After the weekend's scores are in and the result has been worked out, the winning pundit will receive three points for their season's total. Should the challenger win, the total will be added to the 'Rest of the World's' tally. In the case of a draw, the points will be shared between those level on points.

The Rest of the World team won the crown back from Dale last season, the final standings being as follows:
    Rest of the World: 46.5
    Dale: 39
    Tommy: 28.5

John seals a fine victory for the ROTW by picking up double points. The tally for Dale and Tommy would have been enough to win most rounds - but not this one!

    Score after two rounds:
    Dale: 3
    Rest of the World: 3
    Tommy: 0

You can tune in to ESPNSoccernet Press Pass every Friday to see the picks revealed, and the previous week's results analysed. They will also be displayed here at Soccernet.
