Philadelphia Union close to signing Mexico's Marco Fabian - sources

As MLS and Liga MX mull a new tournament like the SuperLiga of the mid-2000s, Taylor Twellman says the time is right for a new competition.
Tottenham's Mauricio Pochettino says he sees growth in football in the USA, and doesn't rule out one day managing in the MLS.

The Philadelphia Union are close to signing Mexico international Marco Fabian, sources have told ESPN FC.

Fabian, 29, has spent parts of the past four seasons with German side Eintracht Frankfurt but has made just two league and cup appearances during the current campaign totaling 127 minutes.

He was sidelined for much of the 2017-18 season by a herniated disc that required surgery. During his stint with Frankfurt, he has totaled 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals.

Multiple sources told ESPN FC that Fabian had drawn interest from teams in both China and the United Arab Emirates, but now looks set to sign with the Union.

Reached by telephone, a Union spokesperson declined comment.

If the deal gets done, Fabian will be expected to fill the attacking role that last year was occupied by Borek Dockal, whose loan from Chinese side Henan Jianye expired after the end of the 2018 season.

Earlier this year, Fabian was reportedly set to move to Turkish side Fenerbahce, but the deal fell apart at the last minute, with some reports alleging that Fabian failed his medical, though Frankfurt denied this was the case.

Prior to joining Frankfurt in January of 2016, Fabian had spent the entirety of his career in Mexico. Other than a one-year loan spell with Cruz Azul in 2014, Fabian played with Chivas, making 232 appearances, scoring 57 goals.

At international level, Fabian has made 42 appearances and scored nine goals.

He was on Mexico's roster for both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, and was part of the side that claimed the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics Games.

ESPN's Taylor Twellman and ESPN FC U.S. correspondent Jeff Carlisle contributed to this report.
