Buck riposte to 'rude and insulting' Bates tirade

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has revealed why the champions felt the need to lodge an official complaint about his predecessor Ken Bates.

The Blues have accused Leeds chairman Bates of bringing the game into disrepute.

Bates branded Chelsea a 'bunch of shysters from Siberia' and Buck used his programme notes to tell fans the club had to hit back and complain to the Football Association.

The London club claim the comment is a racial attack on the race, religion and nationality of their owners.

Buck said: 'Our usual practice is to ignore Mr Bates but his latest tirade was more inappropriate than usual, very personal, rude and insulting.

'Therefore we have lodged a complaint with the Football Association as we feel these comments are unsporting and violate FA rules.

'We have great respect for what Mr Bates did for Chelsea while his was here but we also believe he is now taking every opportunity to attack his former club, its owner and management team.

'This spiteful attack is not in the best interests of Chelsea, our fans, or football generally.' Leeds deny the accusations.

The war between Bates and the club he sold to Roman Abramovich three years ago started when Leeds accused Chelsea of trying to poach three teenagers from their Academy.

Tom Taiwo and Michael Woods, both 16, left Elland Road for London but a third youngster Danny Rose opted to stay in Yorkshire.

The FA and Premier League are currently investigating allegations that Chelsea approached all three illegally, last season.

Buck said: 'There is a formal football process to adjudicate these claims and we will of course participate in such a process.

'Our lawyers have written to Leeds denying the allegations and will mount a vigorous defence.

'Mr Bates has leveraged this complaint into a well-orchestrated media show lambasting Chelsea, Roman Abramovich, [director] Eugene Tenenbaum and others associated with the club.'
