Juventus fails appeal

ROME -- Juventus has failed in its attempt to get a lighter sentence in Italy's match-fixing scandal.

Juventus wanted readmission into the elite Serie A, but said in a statement Friday that the Italian Olympic Committee's arbitration court had rejected its appeal against relegation.

The club said it would consider its plans in a board meeting on Monday.

A ruling on July 14 by the Italian soccer federation stripped Juventus of its last two Serie A titles and relegated the Turin powerhouse to the second division.

An appeals court on July 25 cut Juventus' point penalty from 30 to 17.

After the second ruling, Juventus said the sanctions were still "excessive" and vowed to appeal "through all possible courts."

The Olympic committee's board of conciliation and arbitration is the highest body in Italian sports justice and has the power to uphold or rescind sanctions in sporting disputes. Recourse to the board is mandatory before any appeals to the civil courts.
