Terry delighted with winning beginning

New England skipper John Terry claimed his childhood dream came true at Old Trafford tonight.

In his first game since succeeding David Beckham as skipper, Terry scored the opening goal that paved the way for a landslide 4-0 win over European champions Greece.

It was a remarkable way for the new era under coach Steve McClaren to begin and the Chelsea skipper admitted the evening could hardly have gone any better.

'This was a dream come true for me, especially scoring the goal,' said Terry.

'I have said it 100 times already, I could not feel any more proud than I do now.

'Leading the team out for the first time and singing the national anthem, the whole night really could not have gone any better.'

Terry made a point of kissing the captain's armband as he reeled away to celebrate his headed 15th-minute effort, the start of a mesmeric opening period which offered a stark contrast to England's woeful World Cup efforts under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

However, the defender will be acutely aware that Greece were a shadow of the side which conquered Europe just two years ago and, while first qualifying opponents Andorra will hardly offer a stiffer test at the Theatre of Dreams next month, with Croatia, Russia and Israel to face, Terry is cautioning against reading too much into the result.

'It was a great result and a great performance,' said Terry.

'But we have to make sure we carry it on in the same vein.'
