Staunton recalls Carr to Ireland squad
DUBLIN, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Ireland coach Steve Staunton has recalled Newcastle United defender Stephen Carr for next week's friendly against the Netherlands.
'I am delighted to have the opportunity to name Stephen Carr on my squad for the game next week,' Staunton said in a statement on Tuesday.
'Stephen has vast experience on the international scene and it's great to see him back. I feel he still has something to offer while playing for his country.'
Carr announced his international retirement last October after Ireland failed to reach the 2006 World Cup finals.
Staunton also named Tottenham Hotspur teenager Terry Dixon and Sunderland's Stephen Elliott, who returns from injury, in the 24-man strong squad. Newcastle United's Alan O'Brien receives his first call up.
Ireland play the Netherlands in Dublin on August 16.
