BERLIN, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Hertha Berlin have signed a one-year loan agreement with Olympique Marseille for striker Christian Gimenez, the club said on Friday.
Hertha, who have long been searching for a striker, said that they also secured an option to sign the 31-year-old Argentinian, who holds an Italian passport, for a further two years.
Gimenez only scored one goal in 21 appearances for Marseille last season. But he was the top goalscorer in Switzerland three times, where he scored 92 goals in 123 matches for FC Basel.
Hertha, who finished a disappointing sixth last season, sold their 31-year-old playmaker Marcelinho, who scored 65 goals in 155 league matches to Trabzonspor in Turkey last week after he showed up late for a pre-season training camp.
