McClaren on tour

England boss Steve McClaren returned to Manchester United today as he launched his bid to bring the national team closer to the clubs.

McClaren, who took over from Sven-Goran Eriksson this week, has stressed the importance of forging strong relationships with the club bosses.

He has spoken to several Premiership managers on the phone since he started his new job at the Football Association on Tuesday.

But he is also determined to visit training ground in between games in order to speak to managers and see how his England players are training.

The new England boss, who will pick his first squad next week, chose one of his old clubs for his first stop.

McClaren, who was assistant manager at United until he left for Middlesbrough in 2001, met Sir Alex Ferguson and United's England players including Wayne Rooney.

Ferguson was reported to have fallen out with Eriksson over Rooney's injury before the World Cup but McClaren's visit today was not designed to placate the Scot.

FA director of communications Adrian Bevington said: 'Steve made it very clear one of the first priorities was to strengthen the relationships with all the clubs, especially those with the core England players.

'He will spend time going round all the training grounds over the coming weeks and months.

'He started at Manchester United's Carrington where he met the England players and Sir Alex Ferguson.

'He was there for about four hours from 9am and he had lunch at the club before leaving and he will see them in action in Amsterdam.'

McClaren will travel to Holland to see United play Porto in the pre-season Amsterdam Tournament on Friday.
