St Mirren have failed with an audacious bid to sign former Everton and Rangers striker Duncan Ferguson.
The 34-year-old former Scotland international was released by the Goodison Park club at the end of last season and remains a free agent.
But Love Street manager Gus MacPherson conceded financial constraints saw the bid falter.
MacPherson told Radio Clyde: 'We made an enquiry about Duncan Ferguson and felt, as an experienced striker, he could do a job for us.
'But we quickly realised it was not viable. But he is the type of striker we are looking for.'
