Blades blunted by injury to new boy Davis

Sheffield United's record signing Claude Davis will miss the start of the season and may not play until mid-September due to a knee cartilage injury.

Davis joined the Blades from Preston in a deal potentially worth £3million, but has been ruled out for up to six weeks after sustaining his injury in Tuesday's friendly against Notts County at Meadow Lane.

According to United, Davis may require an operation before being ready to return to action in the Premiership.

The 27-year-old Jamaican was Preston's player of the year last season. In his absence, manager Neil Warnock could turn to Chris Lucketti or veteran Craig Short, who is considering a new contract after initially looking as though he would retire this summer.

The Blades have a three-match pre-season trip to Holland to contend with over the coming week, and Warnock could be without further new recruits David Sommeil and Mikele Leigertwood, both of whom have also been on the injury list lately.
