Flood heading to Cardiff

Manchester City are on the brink of selling their third academy product of the summer.

Irish midfielder Willo Flood was undergoing a medical at Coca-Cola Championship side Cardiff on Tuesday and is expected to sign a four-year contract, with City picking up a £200,000 fee.

This deal will come hot on the heels of the sale of Lee Croft to Norwich on Monday for £700,000 and the earlier departure of striker Bradley Wright-Phillips for £1million to Southampton.

Dublin-born Flood, a Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, was due to fall out of contract next summer and will become Cardiff's 11th summer signing.

The Welsh club are also on the brink of completing a deal to take Jason Koumas from West Brom.

Flood can play on the right of midfield, a role Cardiff need to fill, and at 21 clearly feels he is not going to break through at Eastlands.

City received £21million for another academy product, Shaun Wright-Phillips, when he moved to Chelsea last summer.

They have graduates from last season's FA Youth Cup final side who will be seeking to progress through the system and the recent departures should allow that to happen.

Meanwhile, City have rejected suggestions they have given captain Sylvain Distin permission to talk to Middlesbrough over a potential move to the Riverside.

Distin has yet to sign a contract extension with City and with his present deal due to expire next summer, the Blues know they risk losing the 29-year-old for nothing in 12 months.

However City insist there has been no recent contact from the Teesside outfit.

Stuart Pearce's side were today flying out to China for a two-match trip which will see them face Shanghai Shenhua on Friday and Kashima Antlers on Sunday.

'Sylvain has not been given permission to speak to any club and he will be travelling with us to China,' said a City spokesman.

Two players who will be staying behind are Andy Cole and Nedum Onuoha.

Cole has been nursing a minor knee problem, while Onuoha has still not fully recovered from a calf strain he picked up in the first week of pre-season training.
