In demand Harewood pledges future to Hammers

Marlon Harewood has pledged his future to West Ham despite reported interest from Tottenham and Newcastle.

Harewood, 26, notched 16 goals last season but faces competition from Dean Ashton, Bobby Zamora, Teddy Sheringham and new signing Carlton Cole this term.

Yet he insists: 'Although you take all the transfer speculation as a big compliment it was Alan Pardew who brought me here and I want to give back what he gave to me.

'It is good to have competition in the squad. I don't see it as a threat. It makes you want to go out and improve.'

Boss Pardew said: 'All our strikers know that in some games I will pick two of them and in other games it might only be one. None of them want to leave and that is the key.'

The Hammers, who beat Gillingham 2-1 with goals by Teddy Sheringham and Mullins at Priestfield on Saturday, visit Cambridge United in a friendly tomorrow night but their next pre-season test is not scheduled until Saturday, August 12 when top Greek side Olympiakos are their visitors.
