Pompey sign midfielder Thompson on a free

Portsmouth have signed former Liverpool and Blackburn midfielder David Thompson on a year-long deal.

The former England Under-21 international was released by Wigan at the end of last season after joining from Blackburn in the January transfer window and scored two goals in seven starts.

The 28-year-old becomes manager Harry Redknapp's second signing after Glen Johnson joined on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

The contract renewals are another boost for the south coast club having signed midfielder David Thompson on a one-year contract earlier today.

LuaLua's commitment is significant news for manager Harry Redknapp as he rebuilds under Alexander Gaydamak's new era.

LuaLua continued: 'Portsmouth is a unique up and coming club with very passionate fans and I feel very much at home here, so I'm naturally delighted to have secured my future at Fratton Park.

'I'm grateful to the club's board and management for their support and for showing their faith in me.

'I will not let them down. Pompey is the most exciting rising force in the Premiership and I'm definitely looking forward to being an active part of our success.

'I'm also really appreciative of the supporters here and of course Harry, who is a massive inspiration for me.'
