Hasselbaink off the mark as Charlton beat Millwall

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scored his first goal for Charlton as Iain Dowie began his reign with victory over plucky Millwall.

Hasselbaink opened the scoring after 11 minutes at the New Den but Marvin Elliott scored a well-taken equaliser.

Darren Ambrose quickly restored the lead with a header before Talal El Karkouri and James Walker added a goal each in four second-half minutes to put the game beyond the Lions.

Hasselbaink, signed on a free transfer from Middlesbrough, opened the scoring after being played in by Lloyd Sam whose brilliant through-ball allowed the Dutchman to stroke the ball home.

Goalkeeper Stephan Andersen was called upon on several occasions as Millwall pressed but he could do nothing about Elliott's equaliser as the striker got hold of the ball and smashed it ruthlessly into the back of the net.

But Ambrose restored the lead, heading in after captain Luke Young picked him out with a cross.

El Karkouri extended the advantage after the break as he smashed home a powerful free-kick and substitute Walker, released by Charlton this summer but still training with the Addicks, made it 4-1 on the hour.
