Berbatov bags brace as Spurs down Birmingham
Summer signing Dimitar Berbatov scored twice as Tottenham beat Birmingham at St Andrews.
The Bulgarian, signed for £10.8million from Bayer Leverkusen, scored two excellent goals as a classy Tottenham side showed too much quality for Championship promotion hopefuls Birmingham.
Martin Jol deployed Berbatov alongside Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane in a three-pronged attack but it was the tall target man who impressed with two excellent strikes.
The Premiership side took the game to their hosts from the off and made the breakthrough after 12 minutes.
Hossam Ghaly collected possession from a set-piece and delivered to Berbatov, who took the ball on his chest and volleyed past Maik Taylor.
Two minutes later he bettered that strike with another.
Ghaly again was the provider, picking out the striker who took the ball down with his leg before unleashing a thunderous drive in off the bar.
Jermaine Pennant and David Dunn were lively for Birmingham but Ledley King and Michael Dawson were resolute in central defence.
