Boro chase Arca as Queudrue eyes exit

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate could complete a move for Sunderland defender Julio Arca within days.

It is understood the Argentinian has been on Teesside for talks as Boro prepare for Franck Queudrue's departure to Fulham.

The Frenchman has travelled to London to discuss a proposed move to Craven Cottage and is expected to complete within days.

Southgate is understood to have resigned himself to losing the former Lens player, and will attempt to push home his interest in the South American as a direct replacement.

The 35-year-old did not expect to have to find a new left-back, but that could prove to be his first signing after slow progress to date.

Chelsea defender Robert Huth's move to the Riverside Stadium fell through last week because of his ankle injury, and although that deal could be resurrected - perhaps on an initial loan basis - Southgate has turned to other targets.

He has registered an interest in Mancheaster City's Sylvain Distin, as well as his midfield team-mate Joey Barton, but is yet to make a breakthrough in either case.

With his pursuit of Fulham's Steed Malbranque at an end, he is having to consider alternatives as he looks for the men to add experience to his squad following the departures of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Doriva.
