Ferguson satisfied despite stuttering performance

Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased Manchester United had been tested after they edged out Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in Cape Town.

Dong Fangzhou scored the only goal six minutes from time after the Red Devils failed to impress in South Africa.

Ferguson, however, was happy the team had been given a thorough workout and felt they had been given a tougher game than during the 4-0 defeat of Orlando Pirates.

Ferguson told MUTV: 'They were more organised, an experienced side. I thought they were very well coached and more difficult to break down.

'We started the game well. I thought it was going to be a good performance but it never really took off after the first few minutes. We deserved to win because we carved out a lot of good chances in the second half.

'I'm pleased, it was a good workout.'

Paul Scholes played most of the match before being substituted and the Red Devils manager was happy with the former England midfielder's contribution after he missed the majority of last season.

'He's been out for a long time and probably in the last 20 minutes that started to show which is why we took him off but he did well.'

Kieran Richardson was taken off with injury after a forceful sliding tackle by Chiefs skipper Cyril Nzama.

Ferguson, however, denied the injury was serious.

'He got a knock on the shinbone. It's just painful.'
