U-21 women open with win over Denmark

STAVANGER, Norway -- The U.S. Under-21 women's national team opened the 2006 Nordic Cup with a convincing 3-0 win vs. Denmark as India Trotter, Danesha Adams and Katie Griffin tallied for the United States. All three are playing in their first Nordic Cup tournament. The young Americans will face Iceland next on July 18 in their second match of Group B at the world's premier competition for U-21 women. The USA is going for its unprecedented eighth straight title at the 16th Annual Nordic Cup, which takes place every summer in northern Europe. Iceland upset host Norway, 3-2, in the other Group B match, setting up a huge contest on Tuesday that could decide the group title and a berth in the championship game. The winners of the two groups advance to the title game on July 22. "It was a good start, not just the from standpoint of the result, but we were also able to get a lot of players their first Nordic Cup game under their belts," said U.S. head coach Jillian Ellis. "We have a lot of players that are fairly inexperienced at the international level, so to get a win like this in our first game is great. You always have to win the first game of the Nordic Cup to stay in the picture for the championship game, so I was very pleased with their performance today." In the Group A matches, Germany defeated Sweden, 2-0, and England defeated Finland, 3-1.
