Poborsky announces international retirement

PRAGUE, July 11 (Reuters) - Czech midfielder Karel Poborsky announced his international retirement on Tuesday but said he would play one more year with first division team Ceske Budejovice, the club he co-owns.

'The national team is a closed chapter to me,' the 34-year-old told Czech Television. 'Now I am only a fan.'

The World Cup in Germany marked the final appearance on the international stage for the most capped Czech player, with 118 senior appearances.

He scored the first of his eight goals for the national team with a memorable chip against Portugal in the 1996 European Championship quarter-finals.

Poborsky has played for Lazio, Benfica and Manchester United as well as Prague rivals Slavia and Sparta.

He joined Ceske Budejovice, where he is chairman and co-owner, last season after being kicked out of the Sparta squad for criticising the coach.
