Wigan's £5.5m bid for Heskey accepted

Wigan are poised to smash their record transfer fee after Birmingham accepted a £5.5million bid for striker Emile Heskey.

The Latics paid £3.1million for Henri Camara last summer, making him their most expensive purchase to date.

Former England international Heskey will discuss personal terms with the Premiership side with a view to completing the move.

Blues have opted to cash in on 28-year-old Heskey, arguably their most valuable asset, as they rebuild their squad for life in the Coca-Cola Championship following relegation last season.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell revealed earlier today he had made a bid for the former Liverpool forward.

Jewell is desperate to land a quality striker, especially after seeing Jason Roberts join Blackburn for £3million last week.

However, the Latics boss has again struggled to attract quality names to the JJB Stadium this summer, notably failing with an £8.5million bid for Andy Johnson, with the striker opting for Everton.

Although Heskey's goalscoring record with Birmingham is unimpressive - just 16 in 78 appearances - Jewell sees the 28-year-old as an ideal signing.

'It is not normal for this club to comment on targets until the player has signed,' added Jewell.

'But in this instance it's an open secret that we've made the bid.

'I think he's a player who could do very well for us, but we'll see how the situation develops.'

The 28-year-old has always lived in the midlands and could be reluctant to move back to the north-west.

Jewell also confirmed an approach was made to Blackburn about Robbie Savage.

'We did ask Blackburn about Robbie through the correct channels because he's a player I thought would be a good addition to our squad,' stated Jewell.

'But Blackburn said he was not for sale. That's as far as the conversation went.

'We never spoke to the player, we didn't make him a wage offer and as far as I'm concerned the matter's closed.

'We move onto other targets. But it shows the ambition of the club that we are now targeting some of the Premiership's top performers.

'I'm still very confident we will get the five or six new players we want by the beginning of the season.'

Former Wales international midfielder Savage has also indicated he has no intention of leaving Ewood Park.

Despite Craig Bellamy quitting Blackburn for Liverpool for £6.5million earlier this summer, the 31-year-old will not be following his close friend out of the club.

'I am more than happy at Blackburn,' insisted Savage.

'I knew when I left Birmingham this was the right club for me and nothing has changed.

'It was very flattering for me they showed an interest, but there's a UEFA Cup season ahead and I'm very much looking forward to it.'
