Beckham injured and Rooney sent off for England

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) -- The World Cup is over for England's David Beckham and Wayne Rooney.

Portugal won a shootout 3-1 Saturday night following 120 minutes of scoreless soccer, advancing to the World Cup semifinals for the first time since 1966.

Beckham, the England captain, was taken off in the 50th minute of the quarterfinal against Portugal after his right ankle was stepped on by defender Nuno Valente.

Beckham sat on the bench appearing to be in tears, clutching his right thigh. He later sat on the ground stretching out his leg with towels covering it.

He looked on in disbelief when Rooney was sent off in the 62nd minute for a straight red card for stomping on the groin of Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho.

The score was 0-0 at Gelsenkirchen. Aaron Lennon replaced Beckham, while striker Peter Crouch was sent on for winger Joe Cole.
