Much-wanted Davies to stay at Preston

Charlton have told Preston they will not be pursuing their interest in North End manager Billy Davies while Derby have also had an approach for the former Motherwell boss rebuffed.

The Lancashire club, beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Leeds, allowed Davies to speak to Charlton who parted company with Alan Curbishley at the end of the league season.

However, Preston chairman Derek Shaw told the club's website: 'I have been informed this morning by Charlton Athletic that they are 'going to move on'.

'They will not be pursuing Billy Davies any more and also said they would like to thank PNE for our cooperation and apologise for any disruption to our club

'I would like to thank Charlton for their professionalism in this matter, as I feel that everything has been done via the book.

'Billy will be back at Deepdale today continuing with his preparations for next season.'

Shaw also revealed he had turned down an approach from another Championship club for Davies' services.

'We have today had a request from Derby County to speak to Billy, which we have turned down and this is all we will have to say on this matter,' he added.
