Butcher in Sydney to consider coaching offer

SYDNEY, May 12 (Reuters) - Former England international Terry Butcher has arrived in Australia to consider an offer to coach A-League champions Sydney FC.

Butcher is currently manager of Scottish club Motherwell but has been given permission to speak to Sydney, who are looking for a new coach after the resignation of Pierre Littbarski.

'I'm here now to see what Sydney's got to offer me,' Butcher told reporters on his arrival.

'It's a blossoming league and a great part of the world to live in. In football terms, Australia's taking off.'

Butcher, a former central defender with Ipswich Town and Rangers, played 77 internationals for England after making his debut against Australia in 1980.

He retired after the 1990 World Cup to become a manager and part-time commentator.

Littbarski, a former West German World Cup winner, quit last week after leading Sydney to the inaugural A-League title.

'At this stage we are happy with the way things are progressing,' Sydney FC chief executive Tim Parker said in a statement.

'We have been impressed by his knowledge of Australian football and the Sydney FC team and the players, as well as his drive and ambition.'
