Jewell questions Premier League's Roeder decision

Wigan boss Paul Jewell has questioned the Premier League's decision to allow Glenn Roeder to continue as Newcastle manager without the necessary qualifications.

United will unveil Roeder as their new boss on Monday after winning the backing of the Premiership's chairmen in their bid to appoint him.

The league yesterday gave Roeder special dispensation to continue at the St James' Park helm for next season while he acquires the Pro-Licence badge, with the 50-year-old to start the course this summer.

The move has angered the League Managers' Association, who claimed 'it appears to be an attempt by Newcastle to circumvent the Premier League's own rules'.

Jewell feels it is a case of the Premier League looking after one of the bigger clubs, stating: 'I wonder if Newcastle were Wigan whether it would have happened.

'I'm not a big believer in badges, and I think Glenn is a decent guy and a decent manager, but that isn't my issue.

'The issue is that the rules are there and it's a little bit of big brother.

'People spend a lot of time on acquiring the badges, so why put the rules in if you are not going to adhere to them?

'It doesn't mean that just because you have the badge it makes you a good manager because some people who have these badges and take you on these courses, they could not do the job we do.

'But if the rules are in place then you should stick to them.

'It's like your driving test. When I was 13 I knew I could drive and I didn't want to take the test when I was older, but I had to do it because that's the law of the land.'

Jewell, meanwhile, has revealed plans for a complete overhaul of his squad, one that started yesterday with the release of David Thompson and Stephane Henchoz, while Reto Ziegler returned to Tottenham following a loan spell.

Jewell, though, is determined to significantly strengthen the squad, and has chairman Dave Whelan's cash at his disposal.

The Latics picked up more than £5million merit money after finishing 10th in the Premiership, while they also raked in more cash after figuring in 19 televised games, boosting their total earnings for last season to just under £23million.

Jewell is now aiming to put that money to good use, and is believed to have already made a club record bid of around £5million for Crystal Palace striker Andy Johnson.

'We need seven or eight new players, in particular two new strikers because we need to score more goals,' added Jewell.

'Even though we finished in the top half of the table, our goal difference was minus seven, so that shows we need to improve.

'That's not just down to the strikers, but all over the field. All areas need to be improved because we also need more pace at the back.'
