Stephane Henchoz and David Thompson have been released by Wigan.
Former Liverpool and Celtic defender Henchoz signed a one-year contract last summer following Wigan's arrival in the Barclays Premiership.
Playing alongside captain Arjan de Zeeuw, the 35-year-old helped the Latics get off to a fine start in their debut season in the top flight, and they eventually finished 10th.
Midfielder Thompson, 28, joined Wigan during the January transfer window until the end of the season after being released by Blackburn.
Jewell admits his decision to release the duo was tough, and he said: 'We thank them for their efforts.
'Stephane has played a major part in our season, in particular at the start of the season when his experience was crucial.
'He has been an absolute model professional.
'Thommo is a good little player, but he has found it difficult, in particular as he has had a couple of niggly injuries.
'But he is very unlucky because you could see what he's capable of at Arsenal.
'So it was a tough decision, but I've just thought for next season we will try something different.'
Reto Ziegler, who joined the Latics on loan from Spurs in January for the remainder of the campaign, has now returned to White Hart Lane.
