FRANKFURT, May 4 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund defender Christian Woerns has been banned for four matches for elbowing Nuremberg striker Stefan Kiessling in the face last month.
Woerns knocked Kiessling flat with an elbow that blindsided the Nuremberg striker as he was looking across the pitch for a pass in a match on April 22.
The German Football Association (DFB) suspension means the Dortmund captain will miss the final two matches this season, against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday and at Bayern Munich on May 13, as well as the first two matches of next season.
Woerns was dropped by Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann earlier this year after he criticised some of the Germany coach's decisions. Woerns has since become one of Klinsmann's harshest critics.
The DFB also upheld a three-match ban on Werder Bremen's French midfielder Johan Micoud for grabbing Schalke 04 defender Christian Poulsen in the groin in a match last month.
