Terry to sit out Chelsea's remaining fixtures

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho tonight confirmed John Terry would not play again this season but insisted he would be ready for World Cup duty with England.

Terry will miss tomorrow's game at Blackburn and Sunday's trip to Newcastle after having three stitches in the cut on his shin, just above the ankle.

Mourinho said: 'John Terry is not ready for sure, tomorrow and against Newcastle. But he is improving every day and he will be ready physically to join the national team on the first day.

'I think mentally he can forget Chelsea now for a couple of months and start to concentrate on England.'

Chelsea club doctor Bryan English revealed Terry, 25, came through the title clincher against Manchester United carrying two injuries and would have a scan on a sprained ankle to make sure it is not more serious than it seems.

English said: 'We put two stitches in at half-time, then took them out at the end and replaced them with three.

'In the second half he also twisted his ankle a little as well, so he actually had two injuries. He will have a scan tomorrow, but I am not concerned about anything and expect him to be fully fit for England.'

Mourinho told Chelsea TV that Claude Makelele and Michael Essien also need to rest before the World Cup.

England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson names his provisional World Cup squad on May 8 and must finalise his 23-man party a week later.
