Cahill facing prospect of World Cup KO

Everton midfielder Tim Cahill's World Cup hopes are in severe doubt after the Merseyside club revealed he is set to be be sidelined for six weeks with knee ligament damage.

The 26-year-old Australian suffered the injury during the Toffees' goalless draw with Birmingham on Saturday and will definitely not play club football again this season.

Cahill had a scan on the injury on Monday and visited a specialist on Tuesday for a full assessment of the problem.

Everton's last two games are away at Middlesbrough on Saturday and at home to West Brom on the final day.

Australia open their World Cup campaign against Japan on June 12, before they take on Brazil on June 18 and Croatia on June 22.

Cahill has scored six goals in 32 Premiership appearances this season, having scored 11 league goals in his debut season at Goodison Park.
