MLS fines United's Eskandarian for can stunt
NEW YORK -- D.C. United's Alecko Eskandarian was fined $250 by Major League Soccer on Tuesday for an unusual goal celebration last weekend that included spitting out a mouthful of the energy drink Red Bull.
After the first of his two scores in United's 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, Eskandarian ran to the sideline and caught a can of the energy drink tossed to him by a teammate. Eskandarian opened the can, took a drink and spat it out.
Eskandarian later said the prank was "just for laughs."
On Monday, he was honored as MLS player of the week.
Red Bull bought the MetroStars in March and renamed the 10-year-old MLS team after itself.
