Eskandarian says celebration was 'just for laughs'
WASHINGTON -- Alecko Eskandarian's unusual goal celebration didn't keep him from becoming the player of the week in Major League Soccer, though it still may get him in trouble with the league.
Eskandarian was given the honor Monday, two days after scoring twice in D.C. United's 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls.
The goals won't be remembered as much as Eskandaria's antics. After his first score, in the 41st minute, he ran to the sideline and caught a can of the Red Bull energy drink tossed to him by teammate Jamil Walker. Eskandarian opened it, took a mouthful and spat it out.
Eskandarian later said the prank was "just for laughs," although it is possible he could be fined or face other discipline from the league for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Red Bull bought the MetroStars in March and renamed the 10-year-old MLS team after itself.
Eskandarian missed most of the 2005 season with a severe concussion. He has three goals in four games this year.
