America win CONCACAF Champions Cup for fifth time

MEXICO CITY -- America, Mexico's richest club, won the CONCACAF Champions Cup by beating compatriots Toluca in the two-leg final to qualify for the world club championship in Japan at the end of the year.

The Eagles won 2-1 in extra time after Wednesday's second leg at the Azteca stadium ended goaless. The first match in Toluca also ended 0-0.

America lifted the trophy for the fifth time after wins in 1977, 1987, 1990 and 1992.

Toluca went ahead three minutes into extra time with a header from Paraguayan defender Paulo da Silva following a corner.

America equalized with a controversial goal at the end of the first half of extra time when Brazilian Kleber Boas deflected Christian Gimenez's free kick into the net from what appeared to be an offside position.

Tempers boiled over two minutes into the second half when Gimenez and Da Silva were sent off for fighting after a wreckless challenge on the America midfielder.

The winner came with seven minutes to go when defender Duilio Davino fired home from a rebound after his original header was blocked.
