AC Milan beats Inter 1-0 in Good Friday game

MILAN, Italy -- AC Milan beat crosstown rival Internazionale 1-0 in a Good Friday Italian League game, the timing of which upset Cardinal Ersilio Tonini. The game was moved up in the schedule to give AC Milan players additional time to prepare for Tuesday's European Champions League semifinal against Barcelona. "The insensibility of the soccer world is discouraging," Tonini, an 81-year-old Vatican official, was quoted as saying last weekend in La Gazzetta dello Sport. "There is no justification for this choice." Kakhaber Kaladze scored in the 70th minute for AC Milan (24-4-6), which is second in Series A and trails Juventus (24-1-8) by four points. Juventus is at Cagliari on Saturday. Inter (22-7-5) is third, five points behind AC Milan with four games remaining. Only 2,000 Inter supporters watched the match as hardcore fans, still angry over the club's quarterfinal loss to Villarreal in Champions League, left deserted the stadium section reserved for visiting supporters. The Milan teams share the stadium, and it was AC Milan's home game. "The fans' behavior was unfair to [Inter president] Massimo Moratti ... Milan was not as sparkling as usual because the team probably was already thinking of Barcelona," Italian premier and AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi said.

England
MANCHESTER -- Chelsea moved closer to its second straight English Premier League title when second-place Manchester United tied visiting Sunderland 0-0. Chelsea (26-3-4) has 82 points, six ahead of Manchester United (23-4-7) with five games left. Sunderland (2-25-6) ensured relegation with the tie.

Spain
BARCELONA -- Samuel Eto'o scored his league-high 24th goal in the 11th minute, leading first-place Barcelona over Villarreal 1-0. Barcelona (22-4-7) has a 14-point lead over second-place Valencia and has five games remaining. Barcelona is at AC Milan on Tuesday in the European Champions League semifinals and Villarreal is at Arsenal the following day.
