Prem boss Richards vows to clear name

Premier League chairman Dave Richards has vowed to clear his name after allegations he was involved in a cover-up of illegal payments at his old club Sheffield Wednesday.

Richards has written to FA chairman Geoff Thompson insisting he will prove he has no case to answer.

The payments were made before Richards became Wednesday chairman in 1990 and he uncovered them after taking over the club. It has been alleged that he advised that the payments should not be reported to the FA but Richards claims these are 'wholly unjustified'.

The matter was raised at the meeting of the FA board - of which Richards is a member - this week, and he sent a letter to Thompson yesterday.

The letter says: 'May I firstly say how much I appreciate the comments you made at the meeting vouching for my personal integrity.

'These articles have caused me great concern and they are a wholly unjustified attack on my reputation and a crude attempt to question my integrity.

'As a result I have set about compiling a full and detailed explanation of the precise events of the period referred to some 16 years ago and relating to processes that took place before I was chairman of Sheffield Wednesday.

'I will present this to you but will need 14 days in which to source the relevant records and compile the information. I understand my responsibilities as an FA board member and by doing this you, as chairman, will then be able to examine the facts and make your own conclusion.

'I am certain there is no case to answer and I will be repeating this to my colleagues on the FA board.'
