Brown tried to break my leg, insists Davis

Portsmouth midfielder Sean Davis insists he will hold no grudge against Fulham's Michael Brown - even though he is convinced his former Tottenham team-mate tried to break his leg with a red-card tackle at Craven Cottage.

Brown was sent off in the 73rd minute by referee Chris Foy after a two-footed challenge on Davis in Saturday's Barclays Premiership match.

The Football Association will wait for the official's report but are unlikely to take further action against Brown who now faces an automatic three-match ban.

Davis claimed afterwards: 'He tried to break my leg. I know he tried to, because I saw him look at me. He tried to 'do' me.

'I think if I had gone into the tackle a bit more he would have broken my leg, but there you go.

'But I don't hold grudges with anybody. If that's what you have to reduce him to then that's what happens. He's only an average player anyway. So it doesn't matter.

'We were at Spurs together - but I don't hate him. I don't hate anyone.'

Davis won admirers in Pompey's 3-1 win - their third in a row - for getting up immediately after Brown's tackle.

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp revealed: 'They don't like each other.'

But Fulham boss Chris Coleman said: 'I wasn't aware of any previous bad feeling between the players.

'They both went in strongly but Brownie got it wrong. We won't be complaining or appealing (about his red card).'

Both players had lean spells at Spurs, Brown moving to White Hart Lane for £700,000 from Sheffield United in January 2004 and joining Fulham four months ago. Davis cost Tottenham £2.5million when he joined them at the start of last season.

They became rivals for a midfield place but then Spurs signed Dutch star Edgar Davids and Jermaine Jenas from Newcastle. Redknapp swooped for Davis in the January transfer window, taking him in a £7.5million package with Pedro Mendes and Noe Pamarot from Tottenham.

And although the Pompey manager's glut of new signings took time to gel into a productive unit, they have finally found the winning form - with three wins in a row - to worry Barclays Premiership relegation rivals Birmingham and West Brom.

Although Birmingham earned a valuable point at home to champions and leaders Chelsea on Saturday - and could climb out of the bottom three by beating Bolton at St Andrews on Tuesday - Portsmouth have by far the most inviting fixture list of the three survival runners.

If Arsenal successfully protect their 2-0 first leg lead against Juventus in Turin on Wednesday night and reach the Champions League semi-finals, it will mean Portsmouth's next three matches are at home - Blackburn on Saturday, Arsenal four days later when they have pencilled in a replay date for last week's postponed meeting, and Middlesbrough the following weekend.
