Smertin joins Dynamo Moscow
Alexei Smertin has signed a four-year contract with Dinamo Moscow, according to the Russian club's website.
Smertin was on loan at Charlton after struggling to make an impact with Barclays Premiership champions Chelsea.
The 30-year-old midfielder moved to Stamford Bridge from Bordeaux in August 2003.
Smertin admitted he had enjoyed his stint in England but felt now was the time to return home.
He told Sport-Express: 'I had a successful period in my career at Chelsea where I won the Premier League.
'I also had priceless experience working under (Jose) Mourinho.
'However, I always knew that I would come back to Russia.
'It might have been later than I expected but Dinamo's offer was very interesting. I like the ambition of the Dinamo board.
'I saw a lack of that at Charlton after winning so often at Chelsea.'
He was not short of options after deciding to leave The Valley.
'I had an offer from Fulham and after the national team friendly against Brazil I got an offer from Atletico Madrid.
'But I have chosen Dinamo as there was only one choice for me - London or Moscow.
'Dinamo, Saturn and Lokomotiv were all interested.'
