Prime Minister John Howard has wished both Sydney FC and Central Coast luck as the teams prepare for the inaugural A-League soccer grand final.
Mr Howard said Football Federation of Australia powerbrokers Frank Lowy and John O'Neill had "done wonders" with the sport.
He said the sport had lifted its profile in Australia, but would not comment on which team he thought would win the match.
"I'm only sorry that I can't be at the match this afternoon because of my trip," he told reporters before flying to New Delhi.
"The good thing is soccer has come together in a magnificent way ... so they've run it well and this is terrific."
"I think it's great that it's now lifting its profile attracting more spectators, a lot of the old ethnic division has gone."
