Derby begin search for new manager

Derby will reveal their short-term plans for the future today as the search begins for a successor to manager Phil Brown, who parted company with the club last night.

Brown met with Rams officials and the club announced his departure in a statement on their official website.

It is not clear whether Brown's assistant Dean Holdsworth will remain with the club, or who will look after first-team affairs in a caretaker capacity with a game against second-placed Sheffield United coming up tomorrow night.

The statement read: 'At a meeting between Phil Brown and the Derby County chairman on Monday evening it was decided that Phil would leave the club.

'We would like to thank Phil for the time and effort he has given to the job and wish him well for the future.

'There will be an announcement on Tuesday regarding an interim management team that will be in place from this point forward until a new appointment is made.'

The Rams are languishing in 19th place in the Coca-Cola Championship and were dumped out of the FA Cup by Colchester at the weekend.

Brown was defiant after the 3-1 defeat to Colchester, and made it clear he was prepared to stick it out at Pride Park.

'I'm 100% committed to this football club,' he told the Derbyshire Evening Telegraph.

'The supporters are disgruntled with the board, with me and the players.

'This has not been an easy season for the fans. They saw the club reach the play-offs last season and then saw the manager (George Burley) leave and a new manager come in.

'A level of criticism is being aimed at myself and the board but we all have to take responsibility, including the players.

'It is a very, very difficult situation but not insurmountable.'

Brown brought in Darren Moore from West Brom earlier this month and only yesterday the Rams wrapped up the signing of former Sporting Lisbon player Silva on a month-long loan.

Brown's final league match in charge was the 6-1 defeat to Coventry at the Ricoh Arena on January 21.

Brown took over at Derby in June last year, succeeding Burley, having previously been Sam Allardyce's assistant at Bolton.

The Derby job was Brown's first as a fully-fledged manager.
