Goalkeeper's kidney removed after clash

A non-league goalkeeper has undergone emergency surgery to remove a kidney after he was injured during a football match, it emerged on Friday.

Tamworth goalkeeper Scott Bevan collided with Forest Green Rovers striker Julian Alsop during a Nationwide Conference game on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old Bevan suffered severe swelling to his side and was sick on the coach journey home to Milton Keynes.

He was admitted to hospital after attending accident and emergency and a scan revealed clotting around one of his kidneys.

A decision was taken later to remove the damaged organ.

In a statement posted on the club website, general manager Russell Moore said Bevan had spent a comfortable night in intensive care following the surgery and that he was awaiting an update from the family.

He sent the club's best wishes to the 6ft 5in player, who joined The Lambs from Milton Keynes at the end of October, for a speedy recovery.

Moore said: 'This is very upsetting news for us all at the football club, especially after the recent highs of the FA Cup run in which Scott played a massive part. It puts a lot of football related issues into perspective.'
