African Cup: Tunisia, Guinea advance to quarters
ALEXANDRIA, Egypt -- Defending champion Tunisia and Guinea advanced to the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations on Thursday, joining Ivory Coast and Cameroon.
Silva dos Santos got his fourth goal of the tournament to lead Tunisia over South Africa 2-0 and tie Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o for the scoring lead. Dos Santos scored after intercepting a pass from Benni McCarthy in the 33rd minute, and Selim Ben Achour added a goal in the 57th.
In the opener on a rainy night, Pascal Feindouno converted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute, then scored in second-half injury time on a shot that bounded in off the crossbar as Guinea rallied past Zambia 2-1. Elijah Tana had scored on a header in the 33rd minute for Zambia.
Tunisia and Guinea (both 2-0) are assured of advancing from Group C. Zambia and South Africa, the 2010 World Cup host, are each 0-2 were eliminated.
