Late Taiwo free kick earns Nigeria win

PORT SAID, Egypt -- World Cup qualifier Ghana lost to Nigeria 1-0 Monday in the African Cup of Nations as Taye Taiwo scored in the 86th minute on a 35-yard free kick that deflected past goalkeeper Sammy Adjei.

Ghana, which plays the United States in the first round of the World Cup, was missing midfielder Michael Essien, who injured an ankle Jan. 2 while playing for Chelsea. The Black Stars play Senegal on Friday, then close the first round of the African championship against Zimbabwe on Jan. 31.

In the day's other Group D game, Senegal defeated Zimbabwe 2-0 on goals by Henri Camara in the 60th minute and Issa Ba in the 80th.
