Manchester United's Luke Shaw to fight for place under Jose Mourinho - sources

Steve Nicol and Mark Donaldson ruminate on Luke Shaw's status at Man United after Jose Mourinho stated his intent to lock him down to a long-term deal.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho thinks England have the quality and experience to win the World Cup.
While Diogo Dalot may not be a Man United regular next season, Shaka Hislop feels it's a statement of intent for the future.

Luke Shaw is determined to fight for his place at Manchester United, sources have told ESPN FC.

The defender has been considering his options this summer after struggling to establish himself as a first-team regular since Jose Mourinho's appointment as manager in 2016.

He made eight Premier League starts last season as understudy at left-back to Ashley Young, which helped the former Aston Villa man beat Shaw to a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the World Cup in Russia.

United triggered an option in Shaw's contract last season that will keep the 22-year-old at Old Trafford until at least next summer.

And sources have told ESPN FC that the former Southampton man is set to see out the rest of his deal before making a decision about his future.

Shaw, who has been working with United's head of strength and conditioning Gary Walker this week, will return to Carrington next week for the start of preseason training and is expected to be part of the squad that departs for the five-game tour of the United States on July 15.

He will have added competition for a place in the team next season after the arrival of Diogo Dalot. The 19-year-old is predominantly a right-back but featured for Porto at left-back last season.

Sources have also told ESPN FC that United are still monitoring Juventus left-back Alex Sandro. Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward asked to be kept informed about the 27-year-old's situation during talks with the Italian champions over a possible deal the other way for Matteo Darmian.

Sandro's arrival, should it happen, could force Shaw into a rethink if it means he falls further down the pecking order.

Young has already committed his immediate future to the club by agreeing a one-year extension to his contract in March.
