CAIRO, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Angola midfielder Gilberto has joined the growing list of casualties at the African Nations Cup after being ruled out of the tournament with an Achilles injury.
Angolan officials said he had been flown to Germany on Wednesday evening for an operation.
The tendon injury also threatens to jeopardise his chances of playing at the World Cup finals in Germany late this year.
'But we hope he won't be out that long,' coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves told Reuters on Thursday.
Gilberto was injured during training in Morocco earlier this week. Angola played a friendly in Rabat on Tuesday, drawing 2-2 with Morocco.
The left-sided midfielder was a regular for Angola in their successful World Cup qualifying campaign and also won last year's African Champions League with Egyptian club Al Ahli.
Angola have already lost reserve goalkeeper Lama, who was injured in training in Marbella, Spain last week.
Former youth international Angelo has been called up to replace Lama and Oliveira Goncalves said Gilberto's replacement was likely to be Brazilian-based striker Johnson Macaba.
Angola play their first match in Group B against Cameroon in Cairo on Saturday.
