Nice oust Bordeaux from League Cup

PARIS, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Nice reached the semi-finals of the French League Cup thanks to a 2-1 extra-time win over Girondins Bordeaux on Tuesday.

A deflected volley from midfielder Florent Balmont on 110 minutes clinched victory for Nice who are 14th in the Ligue 1 table, 12 places below Bordeaux.

Striker David Bellion opened the scoring for the home side with a first-half penalty after Mamadou Bagayoko was brought down by Brazilian defender Henrique.

Czech midfielder Vladimir Smicer levelled for Bordeaux on 53 minutes, twisting his way past two defenders before scoring from inside the box.

Midfielder Olivier Echouafni hit the post for Nice from close range after 82 minutes.

Le Mans needed penalties to knock out second division Guingamp in the other quarter-final played on Tuesday.

Goalless after 90 minutes, the match came to life in extra-time, striker Cedric Faure putting Le Mans ahead before Arnaud Gonzalez levelled on 117.

Le Mans then won the shootout 3-2.

Quarter-final action continues on Wednesday with Nancy entertaining AC Ajaccio and Monaco visiting Toulouse.]
