Arsenal defender Calum Chambers signs new long-term contract

Former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson shares his thoughts on how Sampdoria's Lucas Torreira would fit in at the Emirates.
Paul Mariner reacts to the choice words his former Arsenal teammate had to say about the Tottenham players on England's World Cup squad.
David Seaman believes that although a top four finish is achievable for Arsenal under Unai Emery, their defence needs to be addressed.

Calum Chambers has signed a contract extension at Arsenal, with new head coach Unai Emery saying Englishman remains part of his plans at the Emirates.

The Gunners said on Tuesday that Chambers signed a "long-term" contract but did not provide further details. However, the deal is believed to keep him at the Emirates until 2022, one year longer than a previous extension he signed last year.

"I'm delighted Calum has extended his stay with us. He played an important role last season and will be part of my plans this season," Emery said in a statement.

The 23-year-old defender joined Arsenal from Southampton in 2014 and has made 83 appearances for the Gunners, while spending 2016-17 on loan at Middlesbrough.

He only made 12 Premier League starts last season, though, with Wenger using him as a back-up to Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi.

He is one of several promising centre-backs at Emery's disposal, with Rob Holding having signed a long-term extension in May and January signing Konstantinos Mavropanos impressing toward the end of the season.

Arsenal also signed Borussia Dortmund's veteran centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos on Monday to add immediate cover for the injured Koscielny.
