UANL Tigres qualifies for Copa Libertadores

CARSON, Calif. -- Jamie Lozano scored in overtime to give UANL Tigres a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival Monterrey and the championship of the InterLiga tournament in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday night.

CD Guadalajara beat Veracruz 2-1 in the second game.

Tigres' victory qualified it for Copa Libertores, South America's most prestigious club tournament, for the second consecutive year. Tigres reached the quarterfinals in 2005.

Lozano scored in the 91st minute after Monterrey goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco dived forward to deflect Nestor Silvera's 14-yard shot. Lozano pounced on the deflection and took a 16-yard shot that ricocheted off Monterrey defender Felipe Baloy and into the net.

Tigres rallied from a 1-0 deficit despite playing with 10 men since the 54th minute, when Antonio Sancho received his second yellow card and was expelled.

Ricardo Martinez gave Monterrey a 1-0 lead in the third minute with a 26-yard line drive into the upper-right corner of the net.

Tigres' Walter Gaitan, who shared the goal-scoring championship in Mexico's First Division last season, tied the score in the 70th minute with an 11-yard diagonal line drive inside the right post.

Tigres will begin group play Feb. 8 against Corinthians of Brazil, Colombia's Deportivo Cali and Chile's Universidad Catolica.

In the second game, CD Guadalajara used goals from Edwin Borboa and Omar Bravo for a victory over Veracruz, and qualified for a two-game playoff against Colo Colo of Chile for a berth in the Copa Libertadores starting Jan. 24.

Tigres' Gaitan was voted the InterLiga tournament's most valuable player. Gaitan tied teammate Aldo de Nigris for the tournament lead in goals with four.
