Rovers misfit Jansen sees Man City trial put on hold

Manchester City have confirmed Matt Jansen will not be training with the club today.

The forward is currently trying to resolve his future after being released from his contract by Blackburn and had asked City boss Stuart Pearce if he could train with the Blues in order to maintain match fitness.

Pearce was happy to do the 28-year-old a favour and stated earlier today Jansen was expected at the club.

However, it has now transpired the striker will not be at Carrington, although the reasons for the about-turn are being kept private.

City have stressed at no stage did Pearce give any indication he was about to make Jansen an offer, although north-west neighbours Bolton and Wigan are believed to be interested in the player.

Meanwhile, Robbie Fowler has presented Pearce with a major problem ahead of the weekend visit of Sir Alex Ferguson's men - and the City boss could not be more pleased.

Fowler marked his first start of the season by netting a hat-trick in the Blues' FA Cup triumph over Scunthorpe last weekend.

But with Andy Cole, Darius Vassell and Antoine Sibierski all available for the eagerly-awaited visit of the Red Devils, Pearce could yet dispatch Fowler back to the bench, or out of his 16-man squad altogether.

It is a dilemma Pearce will ponder over the next 48 hours. But it is a difficulty he is happy to have.

'When someone comes back after a long period of injury, makes one of his first starts of the season and scores a hat-trick, that presents you with a good problem,' said Pearce.

'I did not want Robbie to fail on Saturday and he certainly could not have done any more. The more problems I have like that, the better it will be.'

Aside from the suspensions of David Sommeil and Ben Thatcher, plus long-term injuries to Claudio Reyna and Danny Mills, City have a full strength squad available.

Loan signing Albert Riera's international clearance has now been received, although it remains to be seen whether the Spaniard will be handed his first start in such a huge match.

Kiki Musampa has recovered from an ankle injury but may also be restriced to a place on the bench at best.
