Thompson deal still in limbo

Socceroo striker Archie Thompson's European transfer deal remains in limbo, with A-League side Melbourne Victory and Dutch club PSV Eindhoven still negotiating over a fee.

Thompson is being sought by Socceroos coach Guus Hiddink's club side on an initial six-month loan, with a permanent deal to follow should the 27-year-old impress.

It is believed the Victory's insistence on deciding any transfer fee after Thompson's loan period is proving the sticking point.

PSV's offer is understood to involve a pre-determined buyout figure, believed to be around $500,000 should it decide to keep the Socceroo beyond the initial six-month loan.

But the A-League club wants the right to up the price for Thompson to move permanently should he perform well during his loan spell.

The move is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Thompson, who would get the chance to play in the world's best club competition, the European Champions League, if the transfer goes ahead.

Thompson is likely to be named on Thursday in Melbourne's squad for its A-League match against Queensland Roar in Brisbane on Sunday if the move is still not finalised.

The Victory's hopes of making the A-League finals are now slim at best after a 1-0 loss to Adelaide United last week.

It could still be in with a chance of making the final four if it beats the Roar at Suncorp Stadium, depending on other results from the weekend.
